Decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has given a rise to a significant population of homeless children. According to UNICEF’s recent estimations, there are 100,000 children living on the streets of Ukraine.
Katya is a coming of age documentary shot over a 10-year period in Kiev, Ukraine. It is about a young, sweet, loving, caring but tough-as-nails runaway called Katya.
At the age of eleven she runs away from home to escape her abusive alcoholic mother and sister. Searching for a new life and a place to live, she ends up at the main train station in Kiev where she meets a gang of street kids living in a nearby underground sewer. There Katya becomes a part of a very harsh underworld, where police brutality, rape and murder is an everyday occurrence.
Katya is a true Cinderella story of a little girl that beat the odds and never stopped believing in the light at the end of the tunnel.
